WHO AM I DEFINING?

He smiles and nods at me
As he walks to his bike
A look of amusement in his eyes
As I fail to recognize.
I rake my brain
To find a name, place or time
Where or when I had seen him!
He is familiar, yet, I am lost.

Another day, another place-
I take my son for a hair cut
The barber is
Talking to a client,
Snipping away as he talks,
The bluetooth perched on his ears...
Cool!
He turns to greet me
Ah! Alright! He is the one!
I slap my hand on my head
Classism, casteism...
Exists in our minds

Times have changed
Progress everywhere
Nobody said I need to be stuck in a place.

  1. I like this, Janaki. I take great pleasure in watching how people progress in life and how slowly the class distinctions are falling apart!

  2. i'm glad that Classism, casteism falls away more and more and people don't have to be stuck in a certain place any more... we had this in a way as well over here in germany when only kids from rich people could afford to go to university...luckily things have changed for good

    1. Claudia, this is still rampant in rural areas...but, yes, we are changing for the better.

  4. Live how this tackles casteism and the progress of time....to me (and fully acknowledging my ignorance of truly understanding it) casteism and classism MUST get eroded over time...by globalisation....from the prevalence of the Internet...information at our fingertips and allowing us to challenge....just like the Bluetooth perched on his ear....but then conversely - there seems to be a new casteism- materialism....for which the divide between the rich and poor seems to becoming bigger and bigger- great write and very thought provoking!...thank you for posting!

  5. My dear Janaki,
You know the saying..."nothing stays the same". With time, people, places and things will change...but not true LOVE. Sorry, you know I had to mention love (smile). By the way, bluetooth is not for me...I am not that cool. Thanks for sharing this interesting post.

    1. Bluetooth is not for me too....not that tech savvy, but I like the way the gap is being bridged today. Thanks for sharing your thoughts (of love) Andy.

  6. A friend of mine was studying to be a barber. His grandfather had a shop in south central LA, and then he grandpa died, while he was still in school, and he had to take it over, but he's doing ok. this would be a nice tribute for him.

  9. What a twist and so true that people are often recognised by what they do and we often dont recognize them in a place where they are as -who they are :) Gud jolter

  11. I think the best part is 'recognizing' the changes :)
