We Indians must hand it over to the Bollywood Director, Karan Johar for popularizing ‘Friendship Day’ and Friendship ‘bands’…the seal of friendship….through his movie ‘Kuch kuch hoti hai’ way back in 1998. By then, I was well past my school and college days!
I am from that time when all these ‘Days’ were not popular in India. (That makes me kinda old. But, again, age is just a number! ;) ) We were not even aware of Friendship day, Mother’s day, Father’s Day etc, etc, etc. Our birthdays were marked with rituals and a visit to the temple…..even today it is so. Blowing candles on our birthday was a bad sign. We have come a long way from that.
When in school or college, we never felt the need to celebrate ‘Friendship Day’ as we were always together except maybe on Sundays; even then we used to find an excuse to meet each other. Life loaded with fun without a care in the world. We all blended into each other’s families without even being aware of it.
And so, even after 25 years we still remain friends…same old giggly girlies who cannot have enough of each other’s company.
Today, everyone is busy on their own, technology should have made things easier…..in a way it has….social networking, internet, mails, SMS…we do it all. I remember a time when I used to religiously write letters to each and every friend of mine. Buying New Year and Diwali cards was a ritual as I had so many to send. It is just copy and paste or forwarding your e-mails and SMSes today. Yet, nothing beats the personal meetings we have once or twice a year. The hugs, the warmth, the bubbling laughter, everyone talking at once, to share everything from where we left off last, fashion and health tips, how to lose weight and of course, reminiscence the ‘good old days.’
Apart from my school and college friends, I have made some amazing friends…..my hubby’s friends, their wives and families. We have remained in touch and are very much is a part of each other’s lives though we do not live in the same city.
‘Friendship Day’ has now stretched into ‘Friendship week’, which may slowly become ‘Friendship month.’ What next?
I am jumping into the bandwagon like others in writing a blog for this day….taking the opportunity to say thanks to all those friends who have made an impression in my life….a lasting impression. I also take this opportunity to thank my online friends of the blogging community for their encouragement and support.
“ To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish 'till death do us part. And hereto I pledge you my faithfulness.”

friends are real blessing in our lives...
