MY BOY

Is this my blue eyed boy whom I birthed? Today, on the threshold of adolescence, I no longer recognize him nor do I understand his language.

Since we saw this hindi movie, ‘Chillar Party’, he has made it his mission to promote the Mumbaiya tapori language, the street language of Mumbai. As I open the door for him, when he returns from school, he greets me with –“Kya biddu?”?????  As I am giving him a piece of my mind, he interrupts me saying – “Kai ko itna mach mach karleri hai? Chal! Kalti maar.” Arggghhhh! That’s why I cut my hair short; it’s easier to pull it out.

Just when I have given up hope that this boy will ever make a fine young man, he does something really cute and sensitive which is endearing. Everything is not lost, yet. There is still hope.

A few days back, my daughter was very late in coming back home after an inter-school competition. She was coming alone by a rick and it was after 9pm and I was worried, tensed and angry. Angry because she had engaged her mobile in conversation with a friend and was unreachable to us. The man of the house was away on work and this young took over. He said, he will call his sister for me. He extracted a promise from me not to scold her after she is back. He said she had won a prize that day, and I should not dampen her victory. With this he went down to wait for her at the entrance of our building. He was tensed too. From a fighting brother he had transformed himself into a protective brother! He displayed maturity and it was so endearing.

Well, one other thing is he cannot stomach a secret, especially when someone has explicitly told him not to tell anybody. He has to tell it to someone and that someone is me. His secrets are always safe with me. And so he got talking, it was about his friend’s granny who was losing her memory rapidly. I explained to him about the age related memory loss and also about Alzheimer’s disease which seemed to satisfy him. Then he shifted the topic to his granny that is my mom. He said –“Ma, I was too young when ‘ajji’ passed away. I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. I couldn’t say my goodbye to her. I did not grieve or cry for her….I feel so sad. But, I remember all the good times we had together.” I had a lump in my throat. Took a deep breath to clear it and told him-“Sweetheart, as you said, you were quiet young. It is Ok you were not able to say goodbye, but the important thing is you still remember and have such fond memories…..she still lives within you.” He sensed my sadness and said-‘Yeah, common mom, she isn’t anywhere else, she is here with us”….with this he bounded off.

Just when I am feeling blessed, he comes back and asks-“khane pe kya kihlareli hai?” I roll my eyes and smile at the same time…Ah! Motherhood.

MEMORIES

Like a bud blossoming
Flowering in the sun
Filling the air with fragrance
They came back to me.
And,It makes me smile!

Deep inside my mind
Like a coiled serpent
Full of poison
Poised to strike.
Behold!It fills me with fear!

Like a child tagging along
Wanting to be picked up
Hugged and cuddled
Full of laughter….
It makes me laugh!

The thorn pierced my heart
It hurt me, pained me
Made my heart bleed
The colour red everywhere.
It makes my heartbreak!

Like the youth,
Flamboyant and colourful
Dangerously uninhibited
Full of love n abandon.
It makes me blush!

Good and bad; Happy and sad
Memories are buried deep
Which we seem to ‘let go’
Time diminishes its power…..
But, do they ever go?

CONSPIRED!

I finally believe in Paulo Coelho’s conspiracy theory, i.e., When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.

Since I read Lousie.L.Hay’s ,”You can Heal Your Life” some 7 years ago, I wanted to get a foot reflexology massage done which she has highly recommended in her book. Somehow, I never got around doing it……just kept putting it off. Well, a bit lazy maybe….no, lazy for sure.  But, by desiring it I had already sent my intention to the universe. And so I was pleasantly surprised when I received a phone call from a Spa saying that I was entitled to their promotional offer which included foot reflexology massage and they were giving a huge discount on that. The middle class is a sucker for discounts and I fell for one. I was finally going to have a foot reflexology massage; the universe had finally conspired in my favour.

I and hubby availed this offer and went to the Spa to keep our appointment. My first Spa experience. We were introduced to our respective masseurs and were led away our separate ways. I surrendered to my masseur’s first touch. Actually, I had pain in my legs, mostly imaginary…..in anticipation of the relaxation that was to be experienced.

My left leg was a bit guarded, (actually it was all in my mind) analyzing every touch, every pressure, trying to feel relaxed and by the time I could actually relax, my masseur had shifted to my right leg. I did let go of my guard and my leg was more receptive.

At the end of 30 minute session, I was relaxed. It was good, it was tingling too……worth every bit of the discounted amount. If I had to pay the actual price, then I would have felt cheated!

Well, I should not be complaining as my wish was fulfilled. Now, I hope the universe will conspire in fulfilling my wish of owning a Volkswagen Beetle, Red. Hope the universe is not driven by the 7 year itch!!

WORRY FREE - BLOG - A- LICIOUS TOUR

Today's post is in conjunction with the Blog-A-Licious Blog Tour 5 - a fantastic blog hop that brings together bloggers of all genres, backgrounds and locations. In today's hop, the blog featured after Memoirs of a Homemaker is the very creative Shelley

HOW TO BE WORRY FREE?

Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere.  ~Glenn Turner

Our mind is like a record player….it is continuously on. It is mans nature to keep on mulling over a thought or an issue. We chew it, toss and turn it, suck all the juice out of it, stretch it and then spit it. Of course we are left with a bad after taste.

Troubles are a lot like people - they grow bigger if you nurse them.  ~Author Unknown

We are what our thoughts are! So be positive!
These are a few of my funda or mantras to keep ‘worry’ at bay –

SLEEP
I take my problems to bed, i.e., I sleep over it. When I get up relaxed and refreshed, I will have the clarity to think well and more over the problem doesn’t seem as ominous as before.

READ
Reading a book helps a lot. We get transported into another world and another time, taking our mind off our problems albeit temporarily.

EXERCISE
Brisk walk, jogging or going to the gym, yoga or whichever exercise you may follow, it will help. Other than scientific reasons that exercises reduce stress, all the huffing and puffing certainly will.

GAMES
If you are a gadget freak and have the latest toys, playing games will help. I just switch on the computer and play either solitaire or some word games which keep the mind active and attentive.

Apart for all these, listening to songs, talking to your loved ones, playing with a pet, meditating……all of these may also help. Take a chill pill or just chill.

You can never worry your way to enlightenment.  ~Terri Guillemets
As the song goes….”Don’t worry, be Happy.”

P.S: Am I worried as to how this blog of mine will be received by others? Hmmmm….I am off to play a game of scrabble!

Enjoy the blog tour!

PUPPY LOVE

“Chillar Party”, the movie is about a dog, by the dog lovers and of course to the dog loving audience. It is about saving a stray dog from being taken away by dog catchers. And it is saved by the kiddos of the said housing society.

NIKKI- She came to our house when she was just a week old. She was a ball of white fur with pink nose and two black dots which passed off as her eyes……….those soulful eyes! It was love at first sight for all of us at home. My brother was cheeky enough to bring home a pet without the consent of either of the parents. But, the moment they laid their eyes on her….they forgot to complain. She was a Pomeranian. She was the darling of our house, totally spoilt like we would if we had a younger sibling. She was with us for 7 years. She took a part of our heart when she passed on. We vowed never to adopt a pet again.

SONY – She was also a Pomeranian, adopted by my in-laws. She was very naughty. She had a strange fetish….as soon as I entered the house, she would snatch my hanky and rip it apart. Then she would hide beneath the bed and sulk. I had to go to her, first scold her, and then cajole her….then only she would come out to play with me. She did not do this with others……and so I always carried a ripped hanky around. She left a void in our hearts when she too passed on. My in-laws never adopted a pet again.

RAMU- He was a stray and the “Hero No. 1” a la our own Govinda. He was flamboyant. He had style and grace. He was tall and handsome. He was a cross between Golden Retriever and Combai. He had a thick coat of brown muddy hair. Those eyes…..all the dogs have beautiful eyes; it mirrors their trust and unflinching devotion. We don’t know how he came to be, but we always used to find his ass parked firmly in front of our gate. Sometimes, he would not even budge from the place. We should have named him “Hanuman” instead of Ramu, because he followed us wherever we went….sometimes even to the temple. He was like our own mascot. We were recognized because of him. He was strong and gained the respect of other strays in our street and became their undisputed leader. He marked his territory. There used to be some gang wars between the strays in the middle of the night much to the chagrin of the people.

He was a stud and had a slew of girlfriends. His harem grew, so did his brood and so did the menace. Neighbours complained to the authorities many times. Some of his girlfriends and kids were caught…. (Sad, but could not help) and my mom used to promptly let Ramu inside our house and shut the door on the dag catcher’s face!

There came a time when we had to be strict with him. We raised the height of our gate and compound wall. He was too smart for us. He always found a way to come inside the compound. We couldn’t help but love him. He had to be sterilized so we drugged him and sent him away to the animal shelter. He came back home after 15 days! He earned the respect of all the people when he returned……because (i) he was drugged when they took him, (ii) he was taken to a hospital which was almost 30 kms away from home,(iii) on the way back he should have battled the other street dogs when he was in their territory…..yet, he found his way back. We all were in awe of him. No one of the street called the authorities again.
Few years’ back he met with an accident, broke the joint of his paw. It got swollen and cancerous. His leg was amputated after some months…….he went on with his life making some minor adjustments…….his did not sit back or give up, he was as active as ever. Well, the cancer and age caught up with him ……….wow! He still can make me cry.

There has been a lot of pressure from my kids and hubby to adopt a dog. But, when it comes to puppies, I am a chicken! In anticipation of pain, I cannot give up on love, but no matter what, the pets live you shattered when they pass on. And I am just not ready.

A CRY.........

Fate rendered you helpless
Fate, put distance between us
I urged you to be strong
When weak was all I felt.
I miss the daily phone calls
Your incessant queries
Wanting to know the nitty-gritty’s
That’s how you chose to be.
There was only love
Whenever we met
An unspoken bond
Only our hearts felt.
Mother became child
Child became the mother
Our roles got so reversed
To me, a position which bothered.
You had to look after me
Cuddle me & embrace me
Driving away my fears
And showing your strength to me.
But, you looked at me with hope
Silently urging me to help
I could do nothing
Prayers was all I said.
HE could not see you in pain
Even to HIM it was a strain
Our love was not enough
It was HIS will against ours.
Why did you give up?
Why did you not fight?
Why did you have to go?
Maa, Living without you is hard
Try as I might.

PARADISE

Like the
Dewdrop on the petal
Your kiss
Lingers on my lips
Your eyes
Dark with desire
Breathes fire
To my parched soul
Like soft silk
Draping my body
Your touch
Tantalizes me
Like the cool breeze
Your whispers
Mesmerizes me
Your love
Scintillates me
I swoon
To your tunes
We fall
Into the abyss
We rise
To the skies
We drown
In the whirlpool of joy
We ride
The waves of ecstasy
We lay
Enthralled and entwined
In this
Land of fantasy!

BROKEN DREAMS

She was a doll
Living and breathing
She was a dawn
Young and promising
She was a fountain
Bubbly and sparkling
She wanted a life
Of love and romancing
She married her Prince
Who was handsome and charming.

He said, he loved her
And she was his Queen.
He soon imprisoned her
Not in love, but in spite,
He breathed fire with hate
In a wink, he changed her fate.
A doll no more,
She was now bruised and swollen
Picking pieces of a spirit broken
Wounded, scalded and
Her dream shattered.
She awaited death
It was all that mattered!!!

VIRTUALLY EXHAUSTED

This was the one thing I vehemently opposed to be brought home. But my ‘not wanting’ was over ridden by my son’s ‘wanting’ that the whole world conspired  with him( mainly my husband) and he got his much desired XBOX 360.

The story unfolded this way. Somehow, I end up being my son’s companion and chaperone to all the super hero and kiddies movies. With the 3D movies in vogue, which I really detest because it is pathetic to view a 3D movies on a normal screen with over-sized plastic specs or the unshaped cardboard specs where you have to scrunch up your nose to keep them from falling or have to hold it in place to have a proper view. So, the movie in question was Transformers 3.

Then, the dad and the daughter duo that had come to pick us up, knowing that the movie was not going to end anytime soon decided to shop for some “toys” for themselves. My daughter bought a camera (for an upcoming inter-school photography competition) Hubby bought an iphone. Then, they were waiting for my son to decide between PS3, Wii or an XBOX. “Jab sab the razee, kya karegi maaji?” I had to grin and bear it all. My hubby blissfully was oblivious to the hole these toys were burning in his pockets!

This weekend saw the family spending some quality time together in front of this idiotic box. We were laughing, hi-fi ing, swearing and acting funny. More than anything else, we sweated it out. Literally! I assumed myself to be fit. But a round of air boxing with my son was a pain in the arm. We ran in place, we jumped, we kicked, and we hit…and were exhausted by this virtual technology.

I have extracted a promise from my son that he will go down and play the real games with his real friends in the real world.  It will take about a week’s time….he will be holed at home, then the novelty will wear off and he will be back into the real world.

Any day I would prefer the real.

WHAT DOES FREEDOM MEAN TO ME?

What does Freedom mean to me?

A few days back a ‘friend’ of mine, NJ (he is a writer and very good at it - http://www.nithinjacob.com/ )on FB posted a status which was a line from the song, ‘ Final cut’, by Pink Floyd.

And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
What would you do?”

Isn’t it true that most of us hide our weaknesses? Right from our childhood we are taught and also we learn from experiences growing up; to overcome our fears, our insecurities and shortcomings to name a few. We are told to be strong and not cry like babies. Which is not bad at all. And we learn…to pretend without meaning to be pretentious, to lie without any malicious intentions. We learn to wear masks as and when needed. We learn to unlearn and we are just humans.

The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage”- Thucydides quotes.

To me freedom means to be courageous. Courage to express myself, unmasked. Courage to accept myself and to be accepted with all my short comings and idiosyncrasies. Courage to accept others as they are without being judgemental (easier said than done).Courage to oppose misuse of my vulnerability, courage to follow the desires of my heart and dreams……courage to be me.

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes”- M.Gandhi.
