I know your history - glorious;
The way you were sought
By the Kings
And the Royalty.
You were young, beautiful,
Gregarious & flitratious too!
They courted you
Fought for you
Winning you over....and over
Transformed you,
Trampled you
Their footprints all over.
Today -
You are a far cry from
Your youth
Look! what those men did to you!
You are choking,
Your veins clogging...
Killing those who come to you
Though brimming with life
Your touch - so cold.
Traces of your charm,
Youth and grace
Visible only to those
Who have seen your soul.
Yet, I seek you
Like a child seeks its mother;
Like a long lost lover ;
Time and again
Hoping against hope
To find you
To be wrapped up in
Your familiar arms,
To feel safe in your bossom
To feel the warmth
You once bestowed.

to be safe in your arms...i think there are many that wish that tonight...i really like you are addressing this to a city though...not what it once was but hope that perhaps it may still be...
ReplyDeleteJanu, this is the wish of every citizen, wherever - to be safe and secure. I like this verse immensely as it captures the essence of the heart of every citizen who is concerned. Hope prevails. My comfort and prayers to the families.
ReplyDeleteJoy always,
Susan
..i'm afraid this is the kind of environment we're gonna leave with our future children... a city of wild rather than a home for a child... this just broke heart for once... yet, still... i am hoping for change/s... and i just started it to myself... excellent voice... smiles...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ode to a hometown seen through adult eyes with an adult heart. Just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteNicely done! I have lived in small cities that save the flavor you long for. But I also venture often into the distorted crimes.
ReplyDeleteLike the human life, perhaps. We all start out pretty, but as we grow, depending how we nurture ourselves, the transformations can be radically different.
being safe and secure in a city..that's what we all wish for and what is just not guaranteed...reminded me also of those old middle age cities when they built city walls to protect the people
ReplyDeleteSecurity is uppermost wherever we stay. A small city offers more I thought. Though facilities are reduced those catering for basic requirements are still available. Nicely Janu!

Just lovely ...:)cannot ask more from a city :)
ReplyDeleteI hope and pray that every city provides a safe haven to everyone that reside in it ..

I've always preferred rural or small town to large cities. I'm glad you chose to write to a city. After yesterday's shooting, even small towns seem to be vulnerable.
