Poetics shhhh…..Silent films

Shiela Moore of dverse poets pub has prompted us to write a poem on the silent film era.
“A tramp, a gentleman, a poet, a dreamer, a lonely fellow, always hopeful of romance and adventure” Charlie Chaplin. He was and still remains one of my favourites.

This is for him……

They are timeless
As timeless as you are
You spoke in silence
Yet, communicated a lot
You dropped a hat
We shed a tear
You missed a step
We laughed a riot
Black and white movies
With feelings coloured
Actions so goofy
And words muted
Emotions portrayed on screen
We felt it under our skin
You showed, we don’t have
To shout, to be heard.
The innocence of characters
The brilliance of the director
To mix pathos with laughter
You were a master story teller.

“If you do not understand my silence, you will not understand my words.”

  1. nice..amazing the stories they could tell without saying a word...rely solely on the actor and and director...it is def a lost art

  2. They were such good actors. Their ability to communicate was amazing, all the more powerful because they were not interrupted by words.

  7. This is so beautiful, the best response to the prompt. You have chosen the man himself and I did not realise how good looking he was as the photo showed. And your poem, your words describe him so perfectly and so beautifully and I enjoyed it and it brought memories. Thank you Janu.

  11. Janu, I adore Charlie Chaplin. Not long ago, I posted a beautiful piece that he wrote in his later years. He was a very spiritual man, it appears, and I voraciously read anything I can find that he wrote. I loved your thoughts here!
