Que Onda...Spanish, meaning "What's up? or What's going on?"
Gone are the days when you would greet a person with a "Hello! How are you?"
Now, it's "Wassup?"... or just, 'sup.'
It is such a sexist word. Ask a guy, 'wassup?' and he is likely to answer, "Nothing, just hanging about."
I am always tempted to answer, "The ceiling, or the sky."
We, the not so young folks have no choice but to keep up with the new generation and so we tag along. We should look and act "cool" in front of the teenaged friends of our kids. Else, we could be passed on as a piece of furniture in the house.
So much has been said about the SMS lingo. It is irritating, because I can not understand it for the most part. Have to keep asking my kids about it...and they give this look as if I am a retard! It is for the people who are too lazy to type and for the people who love the English language, it is sheer blasphemy. Well, these are just my thoughts.
The day is not so far when 'sup' is further shortened to 'up' and I can certainly be caught looking up!
A-To-Z Challenge
I'm quite blah about sms lingo, but I get caught up once in a while, when my nephews and nieces text me.

The SMS language baffles me - I have to look it up on the internet or ask for an explanation. And agree, it is blasphemy. Nice post Janu.
ReplyDeleteNice thought, of course English has been murdered by the SMS lingo, but sometimes, I guess its just cool....so 'sup?!
ReplyDeleteLOL
I detest sms lingo ! But it seems people like us are in a minority !
ReplyDeleteKids are just plain lazy and speak like they text. I can understand their lingo but refuse to indulge in the same.
ReplyDeletehahha
ReplyDeletemy sis gets frustrated when ever she talks to me. and I tease her that she HAS got old but its true some times WE HAVE TO LEARN stuff
like I learnt internet lingo
But I can Never use SUP . its not so tough to type Was infront of it
strange !
Guess what? To people who ask me wassup, I do reply the ceiling and at other times, the sky. The expression on their faces are worth seeing! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThough I do not have a problem in using the sms lingo, I prefer to see English the old way, the way we were taught when in school, with all the vowels and consonants in their rightful places.
Ha ha ha ha ha Janaki.....just hanging around eh? So with you on the SMS lingo. Good one!
ReplyDeleteLOL :D That was a good one, Janaki! I hate SMS lingo and seeing it on blogs and messages, it makes me cringe. But guess, it is going to stay as everyday newer and newer words are added in this language. The other day, sonny boy said, "I have qualied for the Marathons". Husband and me were looking at each other... :|
ReplyDeleteHahaha...I can understand your feelings very well.By the way, daughter is 21 and she showed me a trail of 'sup' messages lying unanswered in her phone.Earlier it used be "NMU" for "SUP". So chill mom there is hope...:D
ReplyDeleteNMU=( Nothing much.You?)
I take an uppity attitude to SMS language. It's useful for SMSes but can lead to a lot of confusion too! Recently I read about a Mom who messaged her daughter - "WTF for a long time!" The daughter was shocked, until her mother spelled it out - We're there for a long time!" :P
ReplyDeleteLolz...a mother writing WTF to her daughter...lolz
Deletewhats up girl ! :P :P
ReplyDeleteI agree on the SMS language and all this sup things looks not so cool to me as if we are trying hard to be what we essentially not are...Anyways lemme try using que onda today on few ppl n see their reactions...lolz
ReplyDeleteYes SMS language is annoying!
ReplyDeleteIt is annoying and kids only shorten language up so they don't have to type it all out when they text. Even on the off chance that I text I always type every word out. Guess I am just weird.

haha; agree with you janaki - the other day i got a forward sms that read COD - later i came to know that as chill out dude- duh !
ReplyDeletei am pretty good at inferring the sms lingo but i hate to use it. and get irritated when someone uses too much of it. Li'l bit is okay but then there are many around who writes sentence after sentence in sms lingo. :O
ReplyDeleteI am definitely not cool, according to my kids anyway. With the old set, I'm spectacular :P
ReplyDeleteOMG!! LOL!!! :D
ReplyDeleteI don't like killing words either. Mixed opinions though... some words like LOL and OMG are okay, whereas "ur" and "lyk" and "fmly" are NO NO. :) Not cool in my kids eyes, not in my parents either!
ReplyDeleteI think we should come up with our own lingo to stump them. If you can't join 'em, try to beat 'em harder.
