Saying goodbyes is never easy.
Some rituals & ceremonies,
Some chants & hymns,
Some offerings & donations,
To cleanse your soul...
To do, what is your duty,
For those who have passed on.
Doing these...they say
The soul raises itself
Towards heaven...
We don’t know
Yet, we believe....
Believe that our loved ones
Are better off
In the next world
Wherever that is!

Your poetic words ring true as we cling to beliefs about death to ensure loved ones continue the journey. Uncertainty awaits us in death but there's no questioning we're all creatures of habit thus the rituals are a certainly. Enjoyable...Thanks for sharing!!

ReplyDeleteLove reading your moving poems, Janaki. Beautiful...
ReplyDeleteThanks dear.
DeleteWe hope and believe, often, that the pain and horror they may have experienced while alive will find some form of solace - somewhere/someplace beyond time/space. I guess if there is somewhere like that, it would blow our conceptions about how the universe is out of the water. Thank you for exploring what the other shore might mean in your poem!
ReplyDeleteThank you Charles. Hinduism always believes in after life.
Deletei always think there is some comfort in those rituals and that it helps those, that have to let go...even though we can be never sure how this next world looks like exactly..
ReplyDelete:-) thanks Claudia.

DeleteI like your straight forward thoughts on the rituals of death, and yes, all we can do is believe.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheila.
DeleteYes, we believe because that's the least we can do. It is a relief to think they are better of wherever they are. It makes our heart suffer less pain.
ReplyDeleteThats all we can do, believe...which is comforting. Thanks Luchi.
DeleteAlways better on the other side if your on the right side here.
ReplyDeleteTrue..thanks.

ReplyDeleteHi Janaki
ReplyDeleteAs this is my first time on site, I just randomly clicked on your name and was inspired and blessed in reading your poem. Having being raised Christian and now a devotee, there are many sides to the coin....

It was sooooo hard for me to lose Rod's mum. She meant the world to me. I think about her every day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful verse Janaki! The prayers for a loved one for the last journey home are tinged with love, honor and respect. You've done well for this!
ReplyDeleteHank
Wonderful! I am speechless ...
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing
Beautiful and thought-provoking. But it is an almost impossible subject on which to comment. We believe. We hope. And at the same time we are prisoners of our bodies and a biological reality. There is no proof. But there is always hope. You have expressed this timeless dilemma and these conflicting thoughts superbly.

We seem to be members of the same memes, RFW and Saturday Centus. You have already my post about Pierre the cat. Thank you for your interesting story about the mother cat and her three kittens. Ouch! Bad dog that took one of the kits! But dogs can do that. You and your husband must be kind-hearted people to offer them shelter. (I would have done the same.)
Hope you are well and happy!
Best wishes & hugs,
Anna

Dear Janu,
ReplyDeleteHow true the ending of this poem is.
Once our souls have been left to rest, we are indeed in a better place, because there is no more suffering and pain, no trials and tribulations. We return to the dust from whence we came.
Thought-provoking piece from you.
Thanks for sharing.
