While Tiger Woods was making news for a comeback win at the
Arnold Palmer Invitational, there was another win happening which did not make
it to the headlines as it should have. Yani Tseng , the best woman golfer in
the world, was the second youngest to win 15 titles on a LPGA Tour.
It is still a man’s world in the world of sports.
Sachin Tendulkar was covered extensively by the media when
he made his first double century in the ODIs. It was only then it was mentioned
that a woman, Mithali Raj...was the first Indian woman to score a double
century in a test match against England in 2002.
How many of us follow Women
Cricket? Indian Cricketers, men, are raking in crores of rupees, they get to
walk the ramp, they get felicitated in every sport function and they get to act
in the ads. Can any of us name the women in the women cricket team?
A Sania Mirza or a Saina Nehwal only makes it to the
headlines because they make it to the world rankings.
Except for the medal winners in the Asian/commonwealth/Olympic
games, how many women wrestlers, weight lifters or boxers do we know?
Vijendra Singh came into limelight for winning the bronze
medal in the Beijing Olympics. Any takers for Mary Kom, a mother of two...five
times boxing Champion from India?
Women in the US play football on a semi-professional and
amateur level. They do not have Super Bowl for women, do they?
Do I need to say more?

Kudos to you for shining the light on some well-deserved women! I do not usually pay very close attention to the news and such, so I hadn't even realized that this was occurring. It is very unfortunate :(
ReplyDeleteI'm bad I don't notice any of the name in sports. But I can say the only females I ever here mentioned on a regular basis are tennis players. It is really sad.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou bring up a great point...Kudos for writing this post. Women, in so many areas still, don't get nearly the recognition they deserve...certainly not as much as the men in those same areas. Times are a changing though...Thank goodness!
ReplyDeleteHope the time is changing for the better, still a long way to go. Thanks Jessica.
DeleteThere are so many great women who are true sports heroes, we should indeed give them due honor. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes...we should...thanks Joyce.
DeleteI agree with what you have stated! Although I do not pay much attention myself to the sports world outside of football.
ReplyDeleteThanks RoseAnn.
DeleteGood points. Maybe sports is considered a manly thing and maybe so men are more accepted in sports? I dont know really I am just wondering aloud. Thought provoking post...
ReplyDeletemaybe it was before, but women are making their presence felt in the field of sports. Yet they should get their due.
DeleteMaybe you have shone a light on an area that needs addressing but which is wider than the field of sport. Here in the Uk, a sports crazy nation too, although alas to easiuly accepting being second best, we have for some time now held our leading women in the spotlight in the world of sport. This is particularly so with the lead up to the Olympics being held in London. Many of our top gold medal prospects our female, and the media leads their accolades. Being a man with two daughters, maybe i should give thanks that indeed my country realises that talent is worth honouring, no matter the sport, or the sex of the sports person.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that UK is giving the recognition the women in sports need. Apart for this, I think it is the China, Japan and Korea who give lot of importance to their female sports person.
DeleteThank You Larry.
Before the media accepts our society needs to accept it in their mind that women too belong to the world of sports. I have read today abt Mary Kom, she s from a v poor family and has extensive support of her husband wen it comes to her career.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite ironicaly true for our country India. I liked d post.

Mani
You have a point! In India people follow men's like religion. Media should cover some other games too, especially when they perform extremely well. Nice article:)
ReplyDeleteThank you Tarang.
DeleteThank you for sharing! My mother was captain of the Basketball champion's team in my country!
ReplyDeleteExcellent poit here Janaki, women should get their due and soon.
ReplyDeleteHello.
ReplyDeleteYou've raised some very valid points Janu. Women do indeed deserve more recognition for what they do. I always say women should be reverred...it is because of woman that we all exist today.
Thought-provoking post. Thanks for sharing.
