We can spin a web with them
Or string them together
And wear them with pride.
We beat them together for smoothness
Or just blend them with others
And we relish and savor them.
We mix n match them
Tailoring them to our needs
And drape around, making us unique.
We sip them or take a mouthful
Swirl them in our mouths
And are filled with warmth of old wine.
We toss and turn them
Or sometimes sleep on them
And we dream of them.
They seduce us,
Entice us,
Keep us occupied.
We play with them,
Revere them, use them
We can't exist without these.
WORDS - We writers are defined by them!

Oh yes, the do seduce us for sure. Beautifully expressed, Janaki!

Delete"We sip them or take a mouthful
ReplyDeleteSwirl them in our mouths
And are filled with warmth of old wine." All your stanzas are delightful and this is my favorite of all the positive power of words. "Word Play" can be highly competitive too, but I like the gentler side you show.
Yes, so very true! Words are always swirling about in my head, THAT I know. I like the idea of beating them together for smoothness or just blend them together. Writing poetry is definitely word play.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary...you are a fine one in whipping a poetry.

ReplyDeleteThanks Rim.
DeleteVery nicely done! And so true.
ReplyDelete...and sometimes elude us... but if we stick with it, they usually do arrive. :) This is really clever.
ReplyDeleteI love this! And so true for writers, isn't it? I especially liked the stanza:
ReplyDelete"We toss and turn them
Or sometimes sleep on them
And we dream of them."
They can truly haunt us when they aren't cooperating, but in the end, the effort is always worth it. Thanks so much for sharing this with us at Poetry Jam this week!
This is so wonderfully created Janu... so true of words!
