One way to connect with people through one’s blog is to become a member of a ‘bloggers’ group which can boost one’s blog traffic and also by signing up for blog-hops/tours; and or taking up the challenges laid down by other bloggers. That’s actually two ways…isn’t it?
I am doing precisely this as I am new to this world of blogging. The blog hops and challenges give me an opportunity to think and write about a subject which otherwise I may not have come up with.
So, when faced with a challenge of writing, what do I do? I browse the net to gather information if it is a subject which I am not familiar with. Based on that, I either write my poems or the blog. From the time I commit myself to accept the challenge and till I finally put it down on my blog site, I think of nothing else. Once a thought has been implanted in my brain, I have to keep on feeding it with words. Constantly correcting, rephrasing, trying to come up with something apt or better and making sentences until I commit these to my memory….which is a short term memory. No sooner have I transferred these words in my brain to the computer, an auto clean takes place wiping out my short term memory clean. Mean while, I have trained my mind to do all my household chores of cooking, cleaning, dusting….etc, on auto-pilot! It is true. My son often complains that I am going deaf!
Definitions:
Obsess: to have the mind excessively preoccupied with a single emotion or topic. Obsession is unhealthy , a term used to name a chronic thinking towards someone or something that dominates one’s thoughts.
Passion: any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling. Boundless enthusiasm or the object of such enthusiasm. Passion is based around a goal, an internal goal or a core value which gives a sense of achievement or accomplishment.
While browsing the net for more information on this subject ,I came across quite a few interesting blogs and articles.
John Hagel III in Edge Perspectives says: “To say passion becomes obsessions is to make a distinction of degree. It implies that obsession is more passionate form of passion – too much of a good thing.”

Isn’t a first time mom obsessed with her baby? Only that the term we use is maternal love. Here, the obsession is healthy.
A few years back, a murder and subsequent chopping and burning of the body of the murdered victim by his killer and his fiancée shocked our country. The judge pronounced this as a “crime of passion” and the killer got away with just 7 years of imprisonment. So, passion isn’t healthy either?
This is too deep a subject to debate. For me, there is a very thin line separating both. I am passionate (or obsessed) enough with what I am doing unless I do not let it overtake my sense of being or drive me to the point of distress that I am not able to think of anything else or do anything else.I do not get distressed if I am not able to come up with anything suitable as I do take a mental break from the thoughts. I am passionate if I am focused enough to bring out the best in me. I am passionate enough if I am responsible and committed to what I enjoy doing most, it can be my writing, my running or my reading.
So, what do you guys feel about this? As writers are you all obsessed or passionate?

Hi Janu, Oh yes! I become obsessed sometimes when I'm working on a story. Like you, I continue to do my daily chores, but I'm liable to stick the phone in the fridge and hang up the butter. LOL!!
ReplyDeleteLOL...and me,spilling and banging on things.Sometimes, forgetting what I opened the fridge for...Yes, Leah...we all have our ways of multitasking.
ReplyDeleteI too am passionate about everything I do, writing is an obsession. Loved your post, will check out the blog that you have mentioned. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI am extremely passionate about everything associated with me...and I always thought that writing is my obsession..but no longer.
ReplyDeleteI like the topics you choose to write...u area special lady.
Yea I read your blog regularly. I enjoy it every time. You nicely complete a challenge. Still for me passion & obsession are debatable terms.
ReplyDeleteI am passionate..I write from emotion..no matter what it is i am feeling that's where the words come from....As always....XOXOXOXOXO
ReplyDeleteMost of the time passionate. If I feel nothing for my characters or at the time, I just do not write. Lost obsessiveness with aging. So much better, so much happier and so much calmer. Great post Janu. I love your writing.
ReplyDeleteSulekha- Thanks.
ReplyDeleteShreya- as I have said, this is a debatable topic. Thanks for liking my blogs. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteSonia - Hope I too will get wiser with age. Thanks. Love your writings too.

Dear Janu,
ReplyDeleteA Pleasant Afternoon!
Since three years emotions overflow in my posts.I am blessed with over doze of all emotions! So they flow with words!
I am over passionate!
You have narrated the theme so well,
I loved the lines!Keep rocking!
Have a great day ahead!
Sasneham,
Anu
Lovely post!Exactly what I'm going through... you've been so honest. You are doing quite well as a blogger..an obsession usually disturbs the normal fuctioning of a person so much that even his or her day to day activities are not "normal"...there's such a thin line, though!
ReplyDeletePassion rocks...I think the passion that the judge was talking about in the Maria/Jerome case was different from the passion one has for their work.
ReplyDeleteI can see that you, like me, go deaf from time to time - it's my husband's biggest complaint. I think our writing so captures us, that everywhere we go and everyone we meet seems to pass through the 'bloggable moment/person' test (is there a post here, we wonder!)
Great post, Janaki.
Definitely passionate with obsessive borders :)
ReplyDeleteI have been told I am OCD, lol. But, when it comes to blogging about my daughters health issues, I am 100% passionate. This is a wonderful post and so glad you shared it :)
ReplyDeleteI am Neither passionate nor obsessed, just trying to reach out to more and more nice people through my blog! Together let us bring the world a little more closer!
ReplyDelete-PORTIA
Mani..thanks you liked this.
ReplyDeleteAnuPriya...thanks. We are all on the same plane.
ReplyDeleteCorinne - I agree with you when the judge was talking about 'passion' in Maria and Jerome's case...it bordered on obsession too.
Thanks for making this the 'blog of your week.'
Anna and Mary - Thanks for visiting and liking.
Portia - I like your poems passionately..:-) Thank you.
Janu, I don't know how I missed your blog earlier and am so happy to have found it!
ReplyDeleteI identify completely with your passion/obsession when it comes to writing. I will read assigned scripture for my daily devotional, seize, with God's help, upon a selected verse, and meditate upon that while I am tending to necessary chores around the house. I leave the computer on and the verse at the ready so I can type whatever floats to the top of my mind at any given moment.
As I regret each day I spend in not writing, creating something, I guess you could call that an obsession, but I can, when the need arises, let that go. However, the next day finds me wanting to write more than ever! I think a "calling" to write might be the better term here, both for you and for me.
I love the passion in your writing; obsessed or not, I think you are using the gifts God has given you to make this hurting world a better place. I can assure you that your words have made my day a brighter one in which to walk.
Blessings, my dear!
I generally am pretty darned obsessed, and I am passionate about photos. I am passionate about my family, and obsessed with my furry friends, because they cannot help themselves. That thin line is oh so real and very thin.
ReplyDeleteMartha...thanks, your passion comes across in your writings which we greatly enjoy reading.
ReplyDeleteJan- so true, indeed the line is very thin and we yo-yo between the two some times.
I guess we are all a mix of all these…. :P
ReplyDeleteobsessions and passions are part of all of us… maybe degree varies and that makes all the difference…. Na?
:D
I am both passionate and obsessed with writing. I do not find writing fun, but rather a necessity. Like giving birth, I don't particularly enjoy the process but I enjoy what I get out of it!
ReplyDeleteLinda....that's new...like birth. Thanks for sharing your views.
