Huddled on the pavement
Just enough clothes
No protection against the cold
All they have is
The thoughts of food.
Used and abused
A ‘home’ for shelter
‘Mom’ & ‘Dad’ are just words
They have heard.
Discarded, life is a constant struggle.
Hospice is their home
Those twilight years
Vacant, distant look in their eyes
Where’s the family they raised?
Waiting for THE end.
Heartbroken and empty,
Loved and lost,
Only pain and heavy heart
Shattered dreams & hope
Darkness all around them....
Explain Happiness to them!!!

Oh so poignant, I could and do feel every bit of this. Wonderfully real and sad post.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jan.
DeleteJanaki you really know how to wake us up with your verses. We are so engrossed in our lives that we tend to forget about the less fortunate ones.
ReplyDelete:-) glad you liked this. Thanks Rimly.
DeleteI think the only philosophical response is a practical one. One must address the wrongs and bring about conditions that can give them a chance for happiness. As a poet, you've provided us with a picture of injustice, and our response of outrage can serve as a rallying call to seek the overthrow of such conditions as these to exist.
ReplyDeleteThanks Charles.
Deletenot easy...for sure.. but sometimes it's as hard to explain happiness to someone who has everything...and still is never satisfied... i think you can find some of the most content and happy people in the worst places and vice versa.. but for sure..this is no excuse to not offer practical help and do our best to change things for better... i hate philosophy which cuts away the practical needs of people as we're not only spirit but also body and there are needs we have to meet...great take on the prompt..
ReplyDeleteThank you Claudia.
Deletedef hard to do, esp when we measure our happiness by what others have, or against each other...the flip side is i have seen some that have little that are far happier than those with much and all the chains that come with it...
ReplyDeleteTrue...:-)
DeleteOh.. its sadly beautiful.. Loved the way you portrayed.
ReplyDeleteThanks shreya.
DeleteAll you can do is try to teach them to dream.
ReplyDeleteThey do...that is what keeps them going.
DeleteI second what Charles Miller said. And, good for you to make us look at the problem and not ignore it.
ReplyDeleteSo poignant, beautifully written poem!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tarang

ReplyDelete:-) thanks Bonnie
DeleteIt's sad...all the suffering in the world...You capture it really well in this poem. The lines that particularly stuck out to me were:
ReplyDelete"All they have is
The thoughts of food."
and
" Discarded, life is a constant struggle"
Great post.
Thanks Jessica.
