I stepped on a dead snake while going to school one day! Oh,boy! was I afraid! My conscience was gnawing constantly, until one day I finally fell and hurt my leg...the very leg that had the audacity to step on the dead snake. Well, the Naga Devta ( Snake God) had finally punished me!
This is how our fears are fed in the name of superstition. If you are bold enough to question, you are rebuked ..."God will show you one day!" What? I am yet to see!!!
I have seen people wearing so many finger rings that they gobble up the fingers. How can they possibly eat with their hands? How can they for that matter, even clean themselves after pooping? After all, each stone on the ring represents a planet and its power over your destiny and fate and good fortune and...what not. Hence, you are not supposed to remove them or soil them!!!
I love animals..pets, wild, domestic...anything. Maybe I am afraid of a few insects but, generally...I am fine with animals. Why, blame them for our misfortunes when they have just enough intelligence for unconditional love and their survival?
All I can say is...it's all in your head.
Kelly has made us write about our superstitions on Day 7 of BlogFEST2012.

ReplyDeleteSo many needless fears and worries out there . . . superstitions certainly don't help! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts, Janu!
Blessings!
Interesting read! Actually I've written an article on superstition (which got published in a magazine), so I can totally relate with this post :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not huge on superstitions--however I'm not totally saying I'm not superstitious.
ReplyDeleteCheers, Jenn
//Do not believe in superstitions ,they bring bad luck !// Haha...true that !! A good read janaki.
ReplyDeleteThe part about cleaning your hands with so many rings after pooping made me laugh. :D I am not superstitious, but your brilliant post sure brought a smile to my face!

Well, the naga paid off, I reckon -- You have a Nagaraj with you ;)
ReplyDeleteSome beliefs, though in the head, give a certain fulfillment when followed and hence people go through the rituals. I don't have patience for them.
Joy always,
Susan
Good post, Janaki. I completely agree with you. Superstition is bullshit. I hate rituals too.
ReplyDeleteLOL with how to clean up after pooping when one is wearing so many rings hahaha! I used to be superstitious. It's because of my late maternal grandmother's influence -- she's VERY superstitious! It was only when I realized that superstitious beliefs don't really have basis when I stopped believing in them! :-)
ReplyDeletevery true.. although i do wear a ring but that is jsut to keep my mum happy..
ReplyDeleterituals were made by religious preachers not by gods.. god never said do this you will get that .. it was the preachers who for their own benefit created all the rituals
Bikram's
ha i like your bumper sticker as well...yes, i dont believe in them...just another way we try to blame something outside of ourselves....
ReplyDeleteLet's ban superstitions and bad luck! Away with too many finger rings, unless they're diamonds and ours! ;)
ReplyDeleteTotally with Corinne on this :-)
