OBESITY

Obesity is a medical condition.
Obesity is genetic.
I am in no position to talk about statistics.
Both anorexia and bulimia are medical conditions.
Psychotherapy is the most effective treatment for patients suffering from these conditions.
**Making fun of obese people is also a medical condition.

There was a time when eating out was a once in a while (read blue moon) affair. Today, eating at home is a once in a while affair.
Fast food culture has certainly made today's kids and teenagers overweight. Added to this is the lack of playing outdoors.

I have adapted to a healthy lifestyle...blame genetics again.
I eat what I want, I burn it and sweat it out.
My kids are also motivated by me. I hate it when they sit at home in the evenings. I am always pushing them to go out and play.
Discipline is the mantra of a healthy life.

At BlogFEST2012 , Stuart wants us to discuss obesity.

  1. Sadly, in this country, there are more obese children than at any time in our history. While I think some of it is genetic, what we eat and how much we eat, especially when we get little to no exercise, can contribute to any of us gaining weight.
    Thoughtful reflection, Janu!

  2. ugh sadly the truth...its all about convenience and we eat not when we arehungry but when we train ourselves too...and use it to calm our anxiety as well....oy...a sad reality

  3. Obesity may well be a medical condition, but more often it is a "can't get away from the table in time" condition. Most of the obese people I have known simply eat too much. Too large of portions and too many calories in each meal. Then they are overly full and sit down to digest or take a nap. The activity levels are lessened by the overeating. Bad cycle.

Eat less...move more. Simple and it works for everyone. Discipline is the key.

  4. Great comments guys. I love the bathtub analogy. If the water flowing into the bath is greater than the water flowing out of the plughole, the bathtub will overflow. Enough said.

I just hope I am not sensing a case of "oh well, we will just have to accept this, cos it is just to hard to change back." We can get back to where we and our parents and grandparents were, with a little willpower and effort.

I read recently that if a woman who is pregnant, "eats for two", then she is creating more fat genes in her baby that will 'condemn' that child to being overweight when older. So maybe we cause our own genetics.

  6. "Making fun of obese people is also a medical condition." -- oh i couldn't agree more, janaki! they are narrow-minded people.

so good to hear that you teach your kids about discipline as early as now, most especially when it comes to exercise. :-)

  8. Yes making fun of people with eating disorders is a medical condition. I fall in the category of over weight but getting lighter every day!

    Cheers, Jenn

  9. Nicely written Janaki. Playing outside in the evenings is a very Indian thing and a luxury we only get there. I remember those days so well.
