This title sounds pompous right? Well, let me say that I
pride myself in being my own champion.
My friends know my passion for running, my dream to take
part in the marathon; how I got registered for it...against odds and then I
broke my leg! I mean I fractured my right femur bone.
For almost a month before the marathon (in January), I had
pain in my right thigh. My mobility was not hindered and so I thought it to be
a muscle pull. I rested my leg...stopped running. (But, I danced – that’s a
different story) And before the marathon, I had been to an orthopaedist who had
given me a ‘go ahead.’
To cut the long story short, I did participate in the
marathon. I couldn't run but, limped with an excruciating pain. I saw thousands
of people walk past me, faster than me...I saw a very old man run, bare foot
and I pushed myself. I just wanted to cross the finish line.
But, destiny had a different plan. At one point I just
froze. I could not move and was rooted to the spot! As people helped me, I saw
a man with an artificial leg walk past me. Hat’s off to his dedication. If he
could, then I can too. No excuses, right?
People say that I was crazy....yes, I was and still am. It
was a burning desire that fuelled me to push myself to the limits – all for a
dream, a dream yet to be fulfilled and which I will.
I was not disappointed. To walk with a broken leg for 14kms
in no joke.

DeleteDear Janu,
ReplyDeleteI know only too well how disappointed you were not to finish that last marathon. You suffered a setback, but you have the will, courage & determination and I just know you will compete again & finish this time. Just take your time to heal completely. You'll always be my special champion (smile).
