NIGHTIE - THE NEW DRESS CODE.

As I do every year, I am spending this summer vacation at my home town, Bengaluru (Bangalore- former name).

I was standing by the compound and talking to my kids when I saw a lady walk by, wearing a nightie and it was mid morning.

When I was young, I saw the heroins and the vamps in the movies wear negligee and soft silk nighties. The concept of wearing pajamas and night dress is a pretty recent thing here.

With the advent of affordable nighties in the market, it became the new dress code of many middle class women.

Women of all ages and sizes can be seen in the parks brisk walking early in the morning. No wonder many middle aged, frustrated men come just to ogle at this bouncy- bounty creatures!

I have even seen women go to the beauty parlours in a nightie. Wearing nighties within the confines of your home is Ok, but some women change from a very worn nightie to little worn nightie to go to a store nearby. How logical is it?

  2. Don't you think it's just matter of their own comfort and like every other dresses, other peoples will be used-to of that soon.

    1. It is a matter of comfort and personal choice no doubt. This is my view. Thanks.

  3. I have to say... I have seen that sight far too many times and i still cant wrap my head around how a person can wear a nightie OUTdoors! aaahhhh.....I cant do it. But hey, if they are comfortable, then so be it :) Fashion is what we make it right ;)

  4. Shail had a humour take on the nighie some time back, let me see whether I can dig out that post out from her archives :) ya, it has become a national dress code kind of ... it is airy no doubt, however, nightie/housecoat whatever you call it... majority flows the tide.. don't think...

Like, people have asked me after the knot, why I still roam around pyjamas, isn't it time for me to wear the official nightie... !! now what do you answer to such associations

  5. Hello dear Janu.
It seems to be the "in" thing here in the US for women & men to walk about in pajamas and bedroom slippers. Can't say it appeals to me. Nighties & pajamas should be worn at home not in the street, but I guess I'm just old-fashioned...I was never one to follow trends either.
Enjoy your time away and return safely.

  6. LOL! It's definitely not my style to parade publicly in my pjs, but, Andy is right; many (too many for my taste), especially teens, do this in the US.
    Enjoy the vacation!

  7. Hahaha very interesting! There are also people in the Philippines going outdoors in their bedroom clothes. I'm not the type to wear those on the street, though hehe

  8. Somehow wearing nighties outside the home is not to my liking. Many women wear a nightie, use a dupatta over it and walk to the grocer's. Somehow, it is very deplorable to me. Even at home, if there are guests, one feels delicate to walk around in a nightie.

    Joy always,
    Susan

  11. Janu according to me its illogical...I hav seen many times women doing their grocery shopping in supermarkets wearing nightie !!! how logical is that??? they hav time to make up, comb their hair & do all other things but no time to change from house coat (nightie) to a proper dress...yuck....come on yaar ...:)

  12. How funny! Well, not funny-funny, but a cute story. I have the solution though...toss the nightie and wear sweat pants and a tank top! Then, if you have to run out early in the morning, you will already be dressed appropriately LOL ☺
