MANGO.

How I love this king of fruits! A whole lot of memories revolving around this fruit.

Come summer, and we eagerly awaited the arrival of mangoes in the market....even do so now. Dad had a friend in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) who used to send us a basketfull (Big baskets made of bamboo)of mangoes, they were the "Banganpalli" variety which were not available in Bangalore where we lived. No sooner had the basket arrived, we would start dividing the mangoes amongst ourselves ... me and my borther. They were so big that we had to hold one fruit with two hands. They were so pulpy and juicy that one mango would fill our stomach. They were  all organically grown then. The whole house would be filled with the sweet scent of this fruit.

Though we do get this variety of mangoes in Bangalore these days, they no longer have that taste, smell nor are they so large.

It is a tradition in many homes down South, where we eat rotis (Indian Bread) with mango pulp mixed with sugar and milk...like a thick mango milk shake. This was like a ritual. The juice was squeezed by the hand, every drop of it. By the time this was ready, we would be drooling.

The craze for mangoes is still the same today.

  4. Hello Janu.
There's nothing like the aroma of sweet, ripe mangoes. I love them. My in-laws have a tree in their garden and when we were visiting last year, mom would have a basket full of them waiting for us to devour. They are such a versatile fruit too...I particularly like them in my morning smoothies. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Amazing! My son recently did a video on making a 'smoothie' with different fruit, one of which was Mango. Of course, he had to master the art of cutting it and removing the fruit ☺ The taste was wonderful! That will be a fruit that we will have as often as we can buy it at the store!
