These days kids are growing up with gadgets. Am glad that we grew with comics, books and outdoors.
I love this cute, fat guy from the comics, Asterix.
Tintin, Asterix, Mandrake and Luther, Phantom...they were such a part of our daily read.
Obelix stands out and apart as a character as he has been portrayed as dumb witted yet making funny remarks adding to the fun.
He, as a kid would have had fallen into a cauldron of magic potion prepared by the village wizard, hence, he had indomitable strenght. He is a menhir sculptor and would carry it every where and use it an weapon against the Romans.
He resents being called fat, the reason for many fights he has. He has a faithful and a loyal partner in his dog - Dogmatix. His shyness around women makes him look cute.
Well, we had public and private libraries then which are a rare sight now. I keep telling my kids the stories of Asterix n Obelix, Tintin...etc. I would want to read them those comics but, yeah, they are very expensive. The movies or the animated series do not do full justice to the written versions. Nothing like books!

Oh, there is nothing like a book! Thanks for sharing your memories about this character and the comic series. The comic strip I always loved the most was "Peanuts". :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Peanuts is full of wisdom too...thanks Martha.
DeleteGreat memories, books are becoming a rare commodity, it makes me very sad. I loved the stories of Asterix...
ReplyDeleteHello Janu.
ReplyDeleteI remember Tin Tin, Popeye, Beano. My wife is an avid reader & belongs to a book club. How times have changed. One rarely sees a child nowadays with a book. Thanks for sharing.
Day 15 (17): Open My Eyes
You introduced me to a new character. He sounds charming. My favorite character from childhood was Snoopy. I loved that darn beagle. :-)
ReplyDeleteSnoopy is cool too...these are all timeless comics and characters. Thanks Tameka.
DeleteJanu..I had not heard of this Character...it sounded like a very interesting read following him on his adventures. You are right...nothing will every replace a book...to be held and go back to whenever the need to laugh or just bury yourself in a story arises...Thanks for sharing Mr. Obelix with us...:)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Raven.
DeleteHow true Janaki. Nothing like those days of comic books. I used to love them.

Back when I was in my early 20's, I had a slew of comic books that I gave away. If I had known how precious they would become, I would have held on to them. I'm not even sure my children know what a comic book is! Our world is changing at an incredible rate, and I'm not always sure it is for the best.
