QUEER

Actually I do not like to use this word for people with homosexual preferences.

"The only queer people are those who don't love anybody." - Rita Mae Brown.

There is this guy who comes to work out in the same gym as mine. He walks, talks and gestures like a girl and doesn't hide that fact. He is pretty cool about it and that's what I like about him. And, it goes without saying that he is a butt of jokes.

The other guys who are working out and also the trainers are so blunt in making fun of him...they take jabs at him directly. How I hate it! This is very upsetting. We are all the so called educated people. Aren't we sensitive enough? Is it the guy's fault that he was born that way? Yet, no one spares a thought as to what that guy may be going through. Poor guy, he doesn't defend himself. But, just goes on about working out ignoring others.

When I asked my trainer about this...he said, "Hey, we are just having some fun, he doesn't mind." Fun!

I just watched and seethed inside.

  2. Yes, there is obviously a huge difference between IQ and EQ. Cruelty is never ok - even if outwardly "he doesn't mind." I'm not sure if I would have said anything or just seethed inside also. But this reality both infuriates and saddens me.

I love the picture you choose to go along with this post.

  3. Oh, this is so sad . . . I can't stand to see someone bullied in any way; makes my blood boil!
This young man must have a strong sense of self to be able to return to the gym over and over when he has to deal with tormenters.
    Thanks for sharing this, Janaki.

  4. Dear Janu,
Regardless of one's sexual orientation, cruelty and ignorance are not OK. I commend this young man for returning to the same gym to face the onslaught over and over again. To say he doesn't mind is rubbish. I'm sure the jokes and taunts cut him deeply and he probably uses his own jokes to hide his true feelings. So sad. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I'm not sure how it is in other parts of the world, but I find that in India we're pretty intolerant and cruel towards homosexuals - and that's hypocritical to say the least. The young man in your gym must be brave - imagine how much guts it takes to come back to an abusive situation day after day. Thank you for sharing, Janaki.

  6. What a revealing piece this is. That young man is brave and strong, but I'm sure he is hurt by the taunts. Perhaps it is your kind energy that makes him feel safe to return to the gym time and time again. People who make cruel jokes are deficient in some way in my view.
