What better word than my name to write about today? No, I
am not self-obsessed. Many of my friends will not know the meaning of my name
and this is for their understanding.
I was named “Janaki” in remembrance of my fraternal
grandmother, who had passed away giving birth to her third child due to post
partum complications when my dad was just 3 years old.
Origin of the name: Sanskrit
Meaning : Daughter of King Janaka.
In the Hindu epic mythology,
Ramayana, Janaki, most commonly referred to as “Sita” was the wife of Rama, the
King of Ayodhya. She was believed to be the avatar of Lakshmi, the goddess of
Wealth. She is described as the daughter of the earth goddess Bhumi. She was
discovered in a furrow in a plough field and was found by Janaka, King of
Mithila, who adopted her as his daughter. Sita’s story is akin to damsel in
distress...full of overcoming difficulties and making sacrifices. Sita has been
portrayed as an ideal daughter, an ideal wife and an ideal mother.
I am a mere mortal...all I share with her is just the
name!!!
Everyone close to me calls me “janu”...which means ‘my life’
in Hindi. So, the name is cute and special in its entirety and also in
abbreviation.
